Gift Cards For Wedding Gifts

The couple has previously both been married with homes completely furnished. They want to add on a bedroom and would like to just receive Lowes gift cards.

What is a tactful way to word this on the invitation?

Our Thoughts

The best way to handle this is to have the bridal party and close family members spread the word that they would like to have gift card wedding gifts. A second way to spread the word is to post it on their wedding website.

Adding this to their wedding invitations is not something that is recommended. Leave it off of the invitations and spread the word by the two ideas mentioned above.

Asking For Gift Card Wedding Gifts

What is the proper way to ask for gift certificates or gift cards when the bride and groom are relocating to another state immediately after getting married? This is to keep from having to pack up wedding gifts as well.

Our Thoughts

There are a couple ways to handle this situation. First, it is never a good idea to mention your wedding gift preference in your wedding invitations.

Start by asking the bridal party and both families to start spreading the word for you. Word of mouth is a great way to tactfully get the message out to all of your guests.

Also, your wedding website can be used to communicate the message as well. If you don’t already have a wedding website, we encourage you create one since they are a great way to communicate details about your wedding to your guests.

You can even post a message on your website explaining the situation and what store you would like the gift certificates to come from. Choose one or possibly two stores so you can accumulate enough gift cards to get the items that you want.

Gift Cards As Wedding Gifts

by BJ
(Georgia)

How do we tactfully ask for gift cards only?

Our Thoughts

The best way to do this is by having your family and friends spread the word that you would like to receive gift cards as wedding gifts. Also, list it on your wedding website and direct people there who ask about where you are registered.

Gift Card Wedding Gifts

by Nichole
(Houston, TX)

How do we word the verbiage on asking for gift cards? For a little over a year all of our stuff will be in storage and we have no idea where will be when we get back.

Our Thoughts

Good wedding etiquette rules state that you will not want to mention your preference of gifts in your wedding invitations. There are a couple good alternatives, however, for spreading the word.

First, if you haven’t already you will want to choose one or two stores that you would like to receive gift cards from.

One thing to remember is that some guests may still give you a gift instead of a gift card. Identifying a store at least increases the chances that these guests will buy a gift from the store you identified.

If you don’t already have a wedding website, create one and use it to get the word out. Take a minute and explain your situation and why you prefer to receive gift cards and from what stores.

Have some fun and use a poem or rhyme asking for gift cards. Your guests will feel better knowing why you are asking for gift cards and what they are going to be used for.

Your family, friends and wedding party are a great way to spread the word that you would prefer gift cards. Have them spread the word to the rest of your guests.

At your wedding reception you can have a wishing well or gift box as a place for your guests to put their cards with gift cards. There are some really neat ideas that you can use including bird cage gift boxes and other boxes that can match your wedding theme.

Requesting Gift Card Wedding Gifts

by MJ
(east coast)

My fiancé and I just moved across the country a couple months ago. Our wedding is this June and to limit travel for the guests, we will be traveling back for a week to get married where we previously lived.

My concern is that we won't be able to bring back many (if any) gifts in our luggage, because I will already have plenty to cram in there! Like my dress :)
Is there a way to politely remind people of this in the invitation, and politely request that only gift cards or cash be brought to the wedding and reception?

Should I register anyway? And if so, is there a way to request gifts from the registry to be sent to our home (if they don't want to bring cash or gift card)?

I was hoping that people can look at the registry to get an idea for what we need and then get a gift card for us to buy the items ourselves. Also, my fiancé and I have been living together for quite some time, so we don't really need a ton of stuff to register for.

Thanks for any help and advice that anyone can give me!! I have no idea what to put in the invites!!

Our Thoughts

This is a very common situation that many couples face, and there are a few ways to approach it. First, do not put anything about your gift preferences in your wedding invitations as this goes against wedding etiquette.

Your bridal party, friends and family are great resources that can spread the word for you to your wedding guests. Have them get on the phone and start to spread the word for you about your preference for gift card wedding gifts.

Next, use your wedding website as a tool to communicate your situation with your guests. If you don’t already have a wedding website, we encourage you to start one as soon as possible as they are a great way for your guests to learn about all of the details of your wedding.

Be honest and post on your website that you would prefer to receive gift cards from your favorite store and give the reasons why. They are legitimate reasons, so your guests should fully understand.

Registering is not a bad idea as guests typically like to see what their gift cards are going towards. You can also mention on your website that gifts from the registry are appreciated, but you would prefer that they ship them directly to your home address for the reasons already stated.
